The Upper New Street Quarry in Paterson, New Jersey, was an industrial trap-rock operation primarily active from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century (with general trap-rock quarrying in the area documented from roughly 1893 to 1925 before winding down). Geologically, the site is located within the First Watchung Mountain, consisting of an Early Jurassic basalt flow formed approximately 200 million years ago during the breakup of Pangaea. As hydrothermal fluids circulated through gas vesicles and fractures in the cooling lava, they precipitated an exceptional variety of secondary minerals, making the quarry world-renowned for fine zeolite specimens, prehnite, datolite, and pectolite.
