Jade Cove, located along the southern coast of Monterey County near Big Sur, California, is a historic and legally protected coastal locality renowned for its marine deposits of nephrite jade. Geologically, the site sits within the complex tectonic environment of the Franciscan Assemblage, where intense regional metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration along fault zones transformed ultramafic rocks, like serpentinite, into dense nephrite lenses exposed along the rugged shoreline cliffs. Unlike traditional inland hard-rock mining, extraction here has primarily taken the form of underwater and shoreline quarrying, where specialized divers and beachcombers free alluvial boulders from the surf zone. Organized offshore recovery of large jade boulders began in the late 1940s and peaked during the 1960s and 1970s; however, strict environmental regulations enacted with the creation of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in 1992 halted commercial mechanical quarrying, restricting current gathering strictly to hand collection of loose stones below the mean high tide line.

Nephrite is an amphibole mineral variety consisting of an intertwined, microcrystalline fibrous aggregate of either tremolite or actinolite, belonging to the calcium magnesium iron silicate group. Geologically, it forms through metasomatic reactions where silica-bearing fluids interact with dolomitic limestones or serpentinites under conditions of moderate temperature and high pressure, creating an exceptionally tough, interlocking crystalline structure that resists fracturing better than almost any other natural rock. This extreme structural toughness, combined with its characteristic greasy to waxy luster and varying shades of green, cream, white, and black determined by iron content, has made nephrite highly prized across millennia for both prehistoric utilitarian tools and intricate ornamental carvings.
