Nickeline

specimen number:
2262070

location:
Cobalt, Ontario, Canada

description:
Rich masses of nickeline throughout matrix. Classic stuff for this locality and species.

The Cobalt mining district in Northeastern Ontario, Canada, is a world-class mineral field situated within the Cobalt Embayment of the Southern Province. Geologically, the silver-cobalt-nickel deposits are hosted in Proterozoic sedimentary rocks of the Coleman Member, where hydrothermal mineralizing fluids were driven by the heat of the 2.2 billion-year-old Nipissing diabase sill. The locality is a primary source of nickeline (also known as niccolite), which occurs as pale copper-red metallic masses and rare botryoidal aggregates, often found in close association with native silver, breithauptite, and various cobalt arsenides. Historically, mining and quarrying activities exploded after the first major discovery during railroad construction in 1903, leading to one of the most significant silver rushes in history with peak production occurring through the 1920s. While most large-scale silver operations ceased by the mid-20th century, the district has experienced a resurgence in activity through 2026 due to the increasing demand for cobalt and nickel for modern battery technologies. Today, the area is recognized for its unique geological signatures and its enduring legacy as the birthplace of Canadian hard-rock mining.
