The specimen was originally acquired through well-known Munich dealer Wilhelm Maucher. The Himmelsfuerst Mine, located in the Brand-Erbisdorf district south of Freiberg, Germany, stands as one of the most productive and historically significant silver mines in the Erzgebirge region. Geologically, it exploited an incredibly dense network of hydrothermal veins, including the famous "Noble Quartz Formation," which were hosted within the Freiberg gneiss and produced vast quantities of native silver, argentite, and various silver sulfosalts. The mine is particularly renowned among mineralogists as the type locality for the mineral argyrodite, in which the element germanium was first discovered in 1886. Historically, mining and quarrying activities at Himmelsfuerst began in the mid-1600s and continued for nearly three centuries, with the mine reaching its peak as the highest-yielding silver producer in Saxony during the 18th and 19th centuries. Following the demonetization of silver and the depletion of easily accessible ores, the main operations were phased out, and the mine finally closed in 1913. Today, the site is a vital component of the UNESCO World Heritage mining landscape, with its preserved shafts and historic buildings serving as a testament to centuries of advanced Saxon engineering through 2026. Wilhelm Maucher (1879 to 1930) was a highly influential German mineralogist, mining engineer, and specimen dealer based in Munich who played a pivotal role in documenting the mineralogy of the early twentieth century. Educated at the prestigious Bergakademie in Freiberg, Maucher combined his technical expertise with a keen commercial sense, establishing a world-renowned mineral business that supplied top-tier specimens to major museums and private collectors across the globe. He is most famously associated with the Tsumeb Mine in Namibia, having authored the first comprehensive mineralogical description of its unique ore body in 1908 and helping to preserve many of its finest early crystallized finds. In recognition of his contributions to the field, the nickel arsenide mineral maucherite was named in his honor in 1913. Historically, his work acted as a bridge between the industrial mining operations of the German colonial era and the academic world of systematic mineralogy.
