The Charcas mining district, located in the northern region of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, is a major zinc, lead, silver, and copper deposit renowned for producing sharp danburite and calcite specimens. Geologically, the area consists of a complex carbonate replacement and skarn system where thick Mesozoic limestone formations were intruded by Tertiary granodiorite and dacite stocks. The resulting high-temperature hydrothermal activity formed extensive ore bodies along structural fault zones and fractures, creating deep skarn complexes and open solution cavities rich in base metal sulfides and various borosilicate minerals. Commercial underground mining operations began in 1583 shortly after Spanish explorers discovered the rich surface silver veins, making it one of the oldest active districts in Mexico. Industrial-scale extraction expanded significantly in the early twentieth century under corporate management, and the vast mine workings, operated predominantly by Industrial Minera Mexico, have run continuously for decades, processing thousands of tons of complex ore daily into the twenty-first century.

Nifontovite is a rare calcium borate mineral that typically occurs within high-temperature boron-bearing skarn deposits. It forms colorless to white prismatic crystals or dense, fine-grained crystalline masses within altered limestone contact zones, often associated with other borates and calcium silicates. The Charcas district is celebrated by mineralogists for producing some of the finest well-crystallized examples of this uncommon species, which typically serves as an indicator of specialized, high-pH hydrothermal fluids rich in boron during late-stage mineralization.
