The Quiruvilca Mine, situated in the Santiago de Chuco Province of the La Libertad Department in Peru, is a prolific hydrothermal base-metal deposit located high in the Andes Mountains. Geologically, the site is characterized by a complex system of over 250 polymetallic veins hosted within Miocene-aged volcanic rocks, primarily andesites and dacites. The mine is famous among collectors for producing exceptional specimens of orpiment, which typically occurs as vibrant, lemon-yellow to orange-yellow foliated masses or distinct monoclinic crystals often associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite. Historically, mining in the region dates back to the Spanish colonial era, but modern industrial operations began in the early 20th century, notably under the management of the American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO) starting around 1921. For decades, it was a major producer of copper, lead, zinc, and silver, with ownership eventually transitioning to Pan American Silver in the 1990s. While large-scale corporate mining faced significant challenges and transitioned toward closure and environmental remediation in the 2010s, the site remains a legendary mineralogical locality, having provided some of the finest examples of arsenic sulfides ever recovered from the South American continent.
