Orthoclase with Quartz, Pyrite

specimen number:
2292165

location:
Valenciana Mine, Guanajuato, Mexico

description:
Blocky colorless lustrous crystals of orthoclase across the top of matrix with small sparkling crystals of quartz and minor pyrite. This is in good condition. Classic material for this locality known by the varietal name valencianaite.

The Valenciana mine, located in the municipality and historic mining district of Guanajuato, Mexico, was one of the most prolific silver mines in the world. Geologically, the deposit is situated along the major Valles-San Luis Potosi Mesozoic terrane boundary, specifically hosted within the Veta Madre (Mother Lode), a massive, northwest-trending hydrothermal fault-vein system where epithermal precious metal mineralization occurs within Mesozoic schist, shale, and overlying Cenozoic volcanic conglomerates. The silver-rich bonanza ore zones contain fine-grained acanthite, electrum, and native silver associated with quartz, calcite, and fluorite matrix. Formal Spanish colonial mining operations began at the site in 1774 following the discovery of the rich Valenciana bonanza shoot by Antonio de Obregon y Alcocer, rapidly scaling into a massive engineering feat with the construction of the iconic Octagonal Shaft (Tiro General). The mine produced a substantial portion of the world's silver until the Mexican War of Independence disrupted operations in 1010, after which the site experienced various periods of British and American corporate investment, deep-shaft dewatering, and cooperative labor management through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with localized extraction and historical tourism activities persisting into the 2020s.
