Painite is an extremely rare borate mineral that was first discovered in the 1950s and was once considered one of the rarest minerals on Earth. It typically occurs as small, dark reddish brown to orange crystals with a vitreous luster and forms under very specific geologic conditions involving boron rich environments. The most important locality for painite is the Mogok Stone Tract in Myanmar, a region famous for its gemstones including ruby and spinel. In this area, painite is found in metamorphic rocks, often associated with marble and other gem bearing minerals. Although additional occurrences have been identified in recent years, Mogok remains the primary source of significant specimens. Painite is highly valued by collectors due to its rarity, unique composition, and association with one of the worlds most renowned gem producing regions.
