Paterson, New Jersey, is a well known mineral locality where basalt flows of the Watchung Mountains contain cavities and fractures filled with zeolite group minerals and related species. These basalt formations developed during early Jurassic volcanic activity associated with the opening of the Atlantic Ocean. Among the minerals found in the area is pectolite, which occurs as white to pale colored fibrous crystals and radiating aggregates within cavities in the basalt. Specimens from Paterson are of interest to collectors because of the variety of zeolite minerals and the well formed crystal groups found in the traprock quarries of the region.
