Perovskite
specimen number:
2262105
location:
Magnet Cove, Arkansas, USA
description: Magnet Cove, Arkansas, is a world-renowned geological anomaly situated within a small, ring-shaped igneous intrusion of alkalic rocks. Geologically, the site is a Cretaceous-aged carbonatite-alkalic complex consisting of a series of concentric rings featuring rare rock types like ijolite, phonolite, and carbonatite, which were emplaced into Paleozoic sedimentary strata. The district is a significant locality for perovskite, a calcium titanium oxide mineral that occurs there as brilliant black, metallic cubic or octahedral crystals, often found within the magnetite-rich contact zones or hosted in calcite-rich carbonatite. Historically, mining and quarrying in the area began in the mid-19th century, with various operations extracting magnetite, titanium ores (rutile and brookite), and molybdenum starting around the 1840s. While large-scale industrial production for minerals like barite and vanadium took place during the mid-20th century, particularly between the 1940s and 1970s, the area remains a protected and vital site for mineralogical research and specimen collecting through 2026. The locality is exceptionally famous for its mineral diversity, hosting over one hundred different species within a five-square-mile area.
A set of three loose choice perovskite crystals. The size provided is for the largest crystal.
