Plattnerite is a lead oxide that forms in the oxidized zones of lead ore deposits. It typically develops as black, metallic to dull crystals or coatings, often associated with minerals such as cerussite and anglesite formed from the alteration of galena. Plattnerite forms under strongly oxidizing conditions.

The Ojuela Mine near Mapimi in Durango, Mexico, is a historic mining locality that was first worked in the 17th century for silver and later for lead and zinc. Mining expanded during the 19th century and the mine became an important producer of ore from extensive underground workings developed in limestone. The deposit is also famous for its rich oxidized zones, which produced a wide variety of rare secondary minerals. Although mining has largely ceased, Ojuela remains one of the most well known mineral localities in the world among collectors.
