The Imilchil mining and quarrying area, located high in the Atlas Mountains of Er Rachidia Province, Morocco, is a specialized mineral-extraction region celebrated for its unique alpine-type vein geology and production of distinct mineral groupings. Geologically, the district is situated within the High Atlas fold-and-thrust belt, where Mesozoic sedimentary sequences of limestone, shale, and marl were subjected to intense structural deformation and fracturing during the Alpine orogeny. This tectonic activity, coupled with localized alkaline magmatic intrusions, drove the circulation of low-temperature hydrothermal fluids that precipitated magnificent, isolated pockets of minerals within structural fissures, most notably producing exceptional crystals of dark green to black augite, hydroxylapatite, titanite, and deep green epidote. Historically, the region relied primarily on nomadic pastoralism before the mineralogical significance of these high-altitude alpine veins was recognized by local collectors and international geologists in the late twentieth century. Systematic artisanal quarrying and surface trenching expanded rapidly during the 1990s and 2000s, with organized local groups utilizing hand tools and light explosives to carefully extract delicate crystal clusters from the steep mountain walls. While large-scale industrial underground mining has not been established due to the erratic and localized nature of the mineral pockets, targeted seasonal surface extraction and artisanal quarrying activities continue heavily through 2026 to supply the global market.
