description: Pumpellyite is a calcium magnesium iron aluminum silicate mineral that commonly forms in low grade metamorphic rocks altered by hydrothermal fluids. It is often found in basalt and related volcanic rocks that have undergone metamorphism and is typically associated with minerals such as epidote, chlorite, and prehnite. Specimens have been reported from the Quincy No. 6 Mine in Houghton County, Michigan, which was part of the famous Keweenaw Peninsula copper district. The Quincy Mine, including the No. 6 shaft, operated from the mid 19th century into the 20th century and was one of the most productive native copper mines in the region. Mining followed copper bearing conglomerate and basalt layers and played an important role in the development of the Michigan copper industry.
An open pocket almost 2.5 cm across his lined with sparkling green micro crystals of pumpellyite. Minor quartz and native copper present as well. In good condition. Collected in July, 2000 from the dumps. This is very nice for the species.
