The purpurite heterosite series is a mineral series consisting of manganese and iron phosphate minerals that form through the oxidation of primary lithium phosphate minerals such as triphylite and lithiophilite in granitic pegmatites. Purpurite represents the manganese dominant end member, while heterosite is the iron dominant end member, with intermediate compositions forming a continuous solid solution between the two. These minerals typically occur as earthy to massive aggregates with colors ranging from deep purple and violet in purpurite to brownish or reddish tones in heterosite. They commonly develop as alteration products in the outer zones of pegmatites where exposure to oxygen and fluids promotes the removal of lithium and the oxidation of iron and manganese.
