The Usakos area, located within the Erongo Region of central-western Namibia, is a globally recognized locality for artisanal quarrying and underground mining of complex granitic pegmatites. Geologically, these pegmatites belong to the late-Proterozoic Damara Orogen, occurring as highly differentiated, volatile-rich dikes that intruded into older metasedimentary schists and marbles. Extreme fractional crystallization of the pegmatitic magmas resulted in well-defined internal zoning, forming pocket-bearing core zones heavily enriched in lithium, beryllium, boron, and phosphorus. Small-scale exploration and mining for lithium ores, tin, and industrial minerals began in the region around 1910 during the German colonial period, with subsequent waves of mining expanding in the 1940s and 1950s. While large-scale industrial extraction has been sporadic, independent artisanal miners have maintained continuous, seasonal extraction from various pegmatite bodies surrounding Usakos through recent years to supply the international mineral specimen and gemstone markets.

The purpurite-heterosite series consists of rare iron-manganese phosphate minerals that form as secondary alteration products within the highly oxidized zones of these lithium-bearing pegmatites. Members of this solid-solution series represent the endmembers purpurite (manganese phosphate) and heterosite (iron phosphate), which form through the continuous leaching of lithium and the subsequent oxidation of primary triphylite-lithiophilite precursors. Crystallizing in the orthorhombic system, these minerals are typically found in the Usakos pegmatites as massive, cleavable aggregates that lack distinct crystal faces. They are highly sought after due to their striking, satiny luster and intense, deep purple to violet-pink coloration, which becomes dramatically exposed when the specimen surfaces undergo natural weathering or chemical cleaning.

Minerals Unlimited is a historically significant American mineral supply company founded in April 1948 by David B. Grigsby and Scott J. Williams in Berkeley, California. Established during the early post-war boom of specialized mineral collecting, the business was purchased in phases between 1954 and 1955 by Ralph E. Merrill, who systematically shifted the corporate inventory away from decorative lapidary rough material toward rare, systematic mineral species intended for scientific research, academic institutions, and advanced collectors. Due to municipal redevelopment in Berkeley, the company executed a massive logistical relocation in 1970, utilizing five railroad boxcars and two moving vans to transport over one hundred tons of diverse mineral stock to a permanent storefront in the high desert town of Ridgecrest, California. Following the death of Ralph Merrill in 2001, sole ownership of the firm transferred to his daughter, Wendi Ace Elkins, who has maintained the massive, historic inventory as a specialized global mail-order and retail source for rare mineral specimens.
