description: A wonderful example for the species with deep red lustrous crystals measuring to 0.3 cm in size across matrix. This is in good condition and very richly crystallized. The specimen comes with several previous labels, note that the labels misidentify the species. One from the dealer Lawrence Conklin, the other from the U. S. National Museum collection. These are shown at the end of the video. The St. Andreasberg mining district, situated in the High Harz mountains of Lower Saxony, Germany, was a historic underground silver mining center celebrated for its unique mineralogy and deep shaft engineering. Geologically, the deposit is a classic hydrothermal vein system hosted within Paleozoic sedimentary sequences of graywackes, sandstones, and shales that were extensively faulted during the Variscan orogeny. Unlike the broader Harz region, St. Andreasberg features a distinct mineral suite characterized by silver-rich sulfosalts, native silver, and arsenic minerals, including spectacular occurrences of pyrargyrite, proustite, and pyrostilpnite, precipitated within a gangue dominated by calcite rather than barite or fluorite. Historically, localized surface prospecting began in the late fifteenth century, but formal corporate underground operations commenced around 1520 and expanded rapidly into a major industrial network boasting deep shafts like the Samson Mine. Silver production peaked during the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, establishing the district as a leader in deep-level hydraulic mining technology and a prime source of wealth for the Duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg. Commercial extraction systematically declined in the nineteenth century as the narrow, complex vein systems encountered structural exhaustion at great depths, culminating in the permanent closure of the final state-operated mining works at the Samson Shaft in 1910. Lawrence Conklin was a world-renowned mineral dealer based in New York City, widely regarded as one of the most knowledgeable and sophisticated figures in the history of the mineral trade. Operating from his office on 5th Avenue and later from his home in Connecticut, Conklin specialized in "antique" minerals and specimens with significant historical provenance. He was a meticulous researcher and an elegant writer, often publishing articles that corrected historical errors in mineralogical literature. His career spanned over five decades, during which he handled some of the finest known specimens from classic European and American localities, setting a high standard for aesthetic quality and documentation in the field. The United States National Museum mineral collection, housed within the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., is one of the largest and most comprehensive mineralogical repositories in the world, serving as a critical resource for open-source scientific research and public education. Geologically, the collection represents a global cross-section of Earth's history and planetary evolution, containing hundreds of thousands of specimens that preserve pristine examples of primary ore mineralizations, rare crystallizations, structural habits, and cosmic materials like meteorites. The collection grew around a core of early federal survey material and grew exponentially through historic private donations, including the monumental 1926 acquisitions of the Washington A. Roebling and Frederick A. Canfield collections, which added tens of thousands of high-quality mineral specimens and established a permanent endowment for future growth. Officially established in the mid-nineteenth century following the founding of the Smithsonian, the collection has been continuously curated and expanded by federal mineralogists through more than 170 years of active acquisition, cataloging, and research, maintaining its status through 2026 as an unparalleled treasury of the planet's mineral diversity.
