Fresnillo, located in Zacatecas, Mexico, is a historic mining district with operations beginning in 1554. It is not closed; it remains the world's largest primary silver producer and ranks among the oldest continuously operating mines in the world. Geologically, the district is hosted within a complex sequence of Mesozoic sedimentary and Tertiary volcanic rocks cut by intrusive bodies, featuring extensive epithermal vein systems. Within these rich veins, such as the famous Santo Nino system, silver occurs prominently as the sulfosalts mineral pyrargyrite (silver antimony sulfide, also known as ruby silver), alongside quartz, calcite, and other base metal sulfides.
