Pyrite

specimen number:
1115639

location:
Ross Co., Ohio, USA

description:
A large grouping of crystallized pyrite. In good condition.

Pyrite from Ross County, Ohio, is historically collected from exposures of the Upper Devonian Ohio Shale, particularly the Huron Member. Geologically, these pyrite specimens form as authigenic nodules, flattened concretions, and stellate crystal clusters within organic-rich black shales. The precipitation of the pyrite was driven by early diagenetic processes, where the anaerobic bacterial and fungal decay of organic matter--such as fossilized plant spores--triggered iron sulfide nucleation in a low-oxygen marine environment prior to intense sediment compaction.
