The Climax mine, situated on Fremont Pass along the continental divide near Leadville, Colorado, is a massive open-pit and underground operation recognized as one of the largest molybdenum deposits in the world. Geologically, the deposit is a premier example of a porphyry molybdenum system, formed during the Oligocene epoch when a series of highly evolved, silica-rich granitic intrusions repeatedly breached the regional Precambrian granite and schist basement rocks. This intense igneous activity generated extensive hydrothermal fracturing, precipitating fine-grained molybdenite within a vast network of quartz veinlets and stockworks, frequently accompanied by accessory pyrite, fluorite, and huebnerite. The history of the property began with the recognition of the unusual gray mineral in 1879, though commercial mining did not commence until 1918 when the Climax Molybdenum Company responded to critical steel-alloying demands during World War I. Following a post-war shutdown, operations resumed in 1924 and expanded dramatically, transforming Climax into a dominant global producer that operated continuously through the mid-20th century before low metal prices forced a long-term production suspension in 1995. After a thorough modernization program, Freeport-McMoRan restarted commercial open-pit extraction at the site in 2012, and the mine continues to be an active producer of molybdenum concentrates today.
