description: The Huanzala Mine in Ancash, Peru, is a major underground polymetallic mine that has been in operation since the late 1960s. The deposit consists of hydrothermal replacement and vein type mineralization hosted in limestone, producing zinc, lead, and silver. Operated by Japanese interests, the mine became an important source of base metals and is also well known among mineral collectors. Huanzala has produced fine mineral specimens including sphalerite, galena, quartz, and pyrite, often occurring as well formed crystals in cavities within the ore.
Attractive grouping of bright lustrous sharp cubic crystals of pyrite without matrix. In good condition with very minimal micro-damage present. Classic material for the locality and species.
