The Merelani Hills, located in the Lelatema Mountains of northern Tanzania, represent a unique geological environment famous primarily as the world's only source of tanzanite. Geologically, the deposit consists of high-grade metamorphic rocks, specifically graphite-bearing schists and gneisses, which were subjected to intense hydrothermal activity during the Pan-African orogeny. While tanzanite and tsavorite garnet are the primary economic focus, the district also produces exceptional specimens of pyrite that are highly valued by collectors. Merelani pyrite is renowned for its incredible brilliance and complex crystal habits, often occurring as sharp, lustrous cubes, octahedrons, or pyritohedrons that frequently exhibit delicate surface striations and a bright, brassy-gold metallic color. These crystals are often found in association with graphite or as inclusions within transparent silicate minerals, creating a striking aesthetic contrast. Historically, the mines were discovered in 1967, and while most mining is underground and labor-intensive, the steady recovery of these high-quality sulfides continues to make Merelani a vital locality for systematic mineralogy.
