The Viburnum No. 27 Mine, located in Crawford County within the Southeast Missouri Lead District, opened in July 1960 as the foundational operation of the prolific Viburnum Trend. Operated by the St. Joe Minerals Corporation, the mine played a central role in establishing the modern New Lead Belt before officially closing operations in 1983. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within the Cambrian-aged Bonneterre Dolomite, positioned along a prominent reef and microbial facies. The ore mineralization consists primarily of disseminated galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite, accompanied by prominent breccia-filling and open-space filling structures driven by sediment-hosted basinal brines.
