location:
Concepcion del Oro, Zacatecas, Mexico
description: A cluster of bright lustrous golden pyrite crystals, the largest measuring to 3.2 cm in size, these partially coated with small colorless crystals of scalenohedral calcite. In good condition. The Concepcion del Oro mining district, located in the mountainous northeastern corner of Zacatecas, Mexico, is a major historical and modern mineral province renowned for its complex, large-scale polymetallic deposits. Geologically, the district is characterized by a series of tightly folded Cretaceous sedimentary limestone, shale, and sandstone formations that were intruded during the Eocene epoch by granodiorite and quartz monzonite stocks. This intense igneous activity triggered widespread contact metamorphism, creating world-class skarn, manto, and vertical chimney-form replacement bodies exceptionally rich in gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc, as well as a wealth of collectible minerals. Spanish exploration first identified precious metals in the area around 1530, leading to the formal establishment of the Real de Minas de Mazapil in 1548 and the discovery of gold near the modern townsite by the late sixteenth century. While early colonial extractors focused almost exclusively on rich, shallow silver and gold oxide pockets, the district entered a massive industrial phase in 1889 when British investors organized the Mazapil Copper Company to construct deep shafts, processing mills, and regional railroad infrastructure to exploit the vast underlying copper sulfide reserves. Corporate control shifted over the twentieth century with the entry of companies like Compania Minera de Penoles in 1915, sustaining continuous deep-shaft operations through World War II and the late 1900s, which laid the framework for the massive, open-pit bulk extraction and exploratory projects that continue to drive the district today.
