Pyrite with Hematite
specimen number:
9273024
location:
Rio Marina, Elba, Tuscany, Italy
description: Classic Italian specimen, this a sharp large golden lustrous crystal of pyrite with minor hematite. In super condition. The Rio Marina mining district, situated on the eastern coast of the Isle of Elba within the Tuscan Archipelago of Italy, is a historic open-pit and underground mining complex world-renowned for producing classic mineral specimens of lustrous, pyritohedral pyrite and iridescent hematite. Geologically, the deposit sits within the complex tectonic framework of the Northern Apennines orogeny, where late Miocene to Pliocene granitic intrusions driven by regional crustal thinning triggered intense hydrothermal and metasomatic activity. These hot fluids encountered Paleozoic metamorphic basement rocks and Triassic carbonate units, forming extensive iron-skarn and replacement bodies rich in hematite, pyrite, and magnetite within a quartz-calcite-pyroxene gangue. Historically, the iron deposits of Rio Marina are among the oldest continuously worked mines in the world, with exploitation beginning under the Etruscans in the eighth century BC, followed by extensive extraction during the Roman Empire and medieval eras. Industrialized open-pit quarrying expanded dramatically during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to supply Italian steel mills, operating under corporate entities like Ilva until the depletion of easily accessible ore led to the permanent closure of active mining operations in 1981.
