Pyrite with Quartz, Galena, Sphalerite

specimen number:
1052484

location:
Animon Mine, Huaron, Huayllay, Pasco, Peru

description:
Attractive combination piece was sharp golden lustrous striated cubic crystals of pyrite measuring to almost 1.0 cm in size across the top of a crystallized sphalerite matrix with galena and quartz. Some damage present to a few of the quartz crystals, this still very nice.

The Animon Mine, located in the Huaron mining district of Peru, is part of a major polymetallic mining area in the central Andes known for its production of lead, zinc, silver, and copper. Mining in the district began in the early 20th century and has continued through modern times with extensive underground operations following hydrothermal vein deposits hosted in volcanic and sedimentary rocks. These veins formed from mineralizing fluids that deposited a wide range of sulfide minerals in structurally controlled zones at high elevations. The Animon Mine is characterized by complex vein systems and significant vertical development, reflecting the dynamic geologic processes of the Andean orogeny. In addition to its economic importance, the locality is well known for its diverse mineralization, with numerous well formed crystals occurring in open cavities within the veins.
