Pyrolusite from the Taylor Mine near Alberta in Baraga County, Michigan occurs as a secondary manganese oxide mineral formed during the weathering of manganese bearing minerals in the host rock. The Taylor Mine was a small operation in the Upper Peninsula that explored and worked iron and manganese bearing deposits associated with Precambrian rocks of the region. Pyrolusite typically appears as dark gray to black fibrous or massive material in fractures and cavities. Specimens from the locality are of interest to collectors because they represent manganese mineralization from a lesser known mining area of Michigan.
