Geologically, these deposits formed during the Late Proterozoic through the intense hydrothermal alteration of volcanic fragmental rocks, where acidic fluids transformed original minerals into a suite of aluminum-rich silicates including pyrophyllite, andalusite, and topaz. The site is mineralogically distinct for producing massive to radiating crystalline pyrophyllite, often exhibiting a pearly luster and a characteristic light green to white color. Historically, commercial quarrying at the Hillsborough site, specifically the Piedmont Minerals Mine, began in the mid-1940s and continued for several decades, providing raw materials for the refractory, ceramic, and filler industries. Operations reached their peak in the mid-20th century, making North Carolina one of the leading producers of pyrophyllite in the United States. Although large-scale industrial mining at the primary Hillsborough quarry has largely ceased, the site remains a classic locality for geological study and mineral collecting, illustrating the complex volcanic and metamorphic history of the ancient Appalachian piedmont.
