Quartz
specimen number:
1052856
location:
Schlottwitz, Saxony, Germany
description: The village of Schlottwitz in Saxony, Germany, is famous for its hydrothermal vein agates, notably the red brecciated agate known as Truemmerachat. Formed within tectonic fault zones of the Ore Mountains, these deposits originated when older quartz and chalcedony veins fractured due to geological movements. Subsequent hydrothermal fluids rich in silica circulated through the cracks, cementing the broken fragments back together with younger generations of banded agate, amethyst, and jasper. Wilhelm Hoyer (1849 to 1913) was a German engineer and mineral collector based in Hanover. His professional work in railway construction and geology allowed him to systematically assemble a major mineral and fossil collection, focusing on the Mesozoic formations of northwestern Germany. After his death, his collection was integrated into the archives of the University of Gottingen and the Prussian Geological Survey in Berlin.
A cut and polished section of agate. Previously from the collection of Wilhelm Hoyer in comes with an antique label, the specimen dates to the 19th century.
