The Penas Blancas Mine, located in the Boyaca Department of Colombia within the famous Muzo emerald district, is a historic underground mining site with a turbulent history marked by periods of intensive production, legal disputes, and subsequent modern rediscoveries. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the Cretaceous sedimentary sequence of the Eastern Cordillera, where carbonaceous shales of the Rosablanca Formation are penetrated by intersecting hydrothermal veins. These mineralizing fluids deposited calcite, dolomite, and pyrite alongside world-renowned emeralds. Unlike many other regional deposits, the mine is also celebrated by mineral collectors for producing remarkably clear, high-quality quartz crystals that frequently occur in direct association with the emerald-bearing matrix.
