The Boldut Mine, located in the Cavnic mining district of Maramures County, Romania, is a classic epithermal polymetallic deposit situated within the Neogene volcanic arc of the Eastern Carpathians. Geologically, the mineralization is hosted in a complex system of veins that cut through volcanic and sedimentary rocks, formed by hydrothermal fluids associated with volcanic activity roughly 7 to 12 million years ago. This site is famous for its diverse mineralogy, including spectacular specimens of rhodochrosite, quartz, and various sulfides like galena and sphalerite, often found in well-crystallized clusters. Historically, mining and quarrying in the Cavnic area date back to at least the 14th century, but the Boldut sector became a primary focus of modern industrial extraction during the 20th century. Large-scale operations were conducted under state control for several decades, targeting lead, zinc, copper, and silver ores. Most commercial mining at Boldut and the surrounding Cavnic mines officially ceased in late 2006 due to economic restructuring. As of 2026, the mine remains a legendary locality for collectors, celebrated for the high aesthetic quality and scientific importance of its varied hydrothermal mineral species.
