Quartz

specimen number:
2102161

location:
Sweden, Oxford Co., Maine, USA

description:

Lustrous translucent attractive purple crystals of quartz, the variety known as an amethyst, measuring to 3.0 cm in size on both sides of matrix. This is in good condition. Quite nice for this well-known locality.

The Sweden amethyst locality, primarily centered around the Saltman Prospect in Oxford County, Maine, is a significant site for high-quality quartz specimens. Geologically, the amethyst occurs within complex granitic pegmatites of the Sebago Pluton, which intruded during the late Paleozoic Era. These pegmatites contain large hydrothermal cavities or pockets where iron-rich fluids crystallized under specific temperature and radiation conditions to produce deep purple amethyst. The crystals are noted for their exceptional clarity and rich color, often exhibiting scepter growth habits. Historically, mining activity in the Sweden area was most intensive during the 1960s and 1970s, specifically following the 1963 discovery of a major pocket by amateur collectors. While the land is largely private and operations have been sporadic and small-scale, the specimens recovered from this region remain some of the finest examples of amethyst ever found in New England, rivaling those from more famous Maine localities like Deer Hill.
