The quartz localities of Herkimer County, New York, are world-famous for producing "Herkimer Diamonds," which are actually doubly terminated, exceptionally clear quartz crystals. Geologically, these crystals formed within cavities or vugs in the Little Falls Dolostone, a Cambrian-aged sedimentary rock. The crystals precipitated from silica-rich hydrothermal fluids at relatively low temperatures approximately 300 to 500 million years ago, with their characteristic clarity and geometric perfection attributed to their slow growth in a soft, hydrocarbon-rich "anthraxolite" matrix. Historically, while indigenous peoples were aware of the stones, formal mineralogical interest began in the late 18th century as settlers discovered them in the Mohawk River Valley. Commercial quarrying and fee-mining operations expanded significantly in the 20th century, with famous sites like Ace of Diamonds and Middleville opening to the public. Unlike traditional industrial mines, these localities have operated primarily as specimen-producing quarries and tourist destinations for decades, remaining active today as premier sites for both amateur and professional mineral collectors seeking these unique geological treasures.
