location:
Nenthead, Alston Moor, Cumbria, England, UK

description:
Sparkling colorless crystals of quartz across the top of of a fluorite matrix. In good condition.

The Nenthead mining district, located on Alston Moor within the North Pennines of Cumbria, England, is a historic base metal center that formed a cornerstone of the British lead and zinc industries. Geologically, the area is situated within the Alston Block of the northern Pennine Orefield, featuring classic Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) mineralization. The ore bodies occur as structurally controlled fissure veins, primarily hosting galena and sphalerite alongside fluorite, quartz, and baryte, which cut through a rhythmic Carboniferous sedimentary sequence of limestones, sandstones, and shales. Small-scale mining by local monks and prospectors dates back to the medieval period, but systematic industrial exploitation began in earnest in 1692 when the London Lead Company acquired the leases. The company transformed Nenthead into a highly organized industrial complex, developing extensive underground drainage adits like the Nent Force Level and erecting major smelting mills. Production peaked during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries before the London Lead Company surrendered its leases in 1882, after which the Vieille Montagne Zinc Company of Belgium took over operations from 1896 until the ultimate closure of the major mines and processing facilities in the 1930s.
