Quartz

specimen number:
2292225

location:
Luena, Haut-Lomami, DR Congo

description:

An attractive glassy gemmy single terminated crystal of quartz, this is the variety known as citrine. In great condition all around.

Citrine is a macrocrystalline variety of quartz distinguished by its yellow, golden, or amber-orange color, which is naturally caused by sub-microscopic ferric iron impurities or specific radiation-induced color centers within the crystalline lattice. True natural citrine is relatively uncommon, typically forming in granitic pegmatites or low-temperature hydrothermal veins where iron-bearing fluids are present during crystal growth. Because natural specimens are scarce, a vast majority of commercial citrine available on the market is actually created by heat-treating low-grade natural amethyst or smoky quartz in industrial kilns. This thermal enhancement permanently alters the oxidation state of the internal iron impurities, shifting the purple or gray shades into a deep, rich burnt-orange color that mimics the appearance of natural citrine.
