Denny Mountain, located in King County, Washington, contains a skarn deposit formed during the late Oligocene to early Miocene epochs, approximately 22 to 28 million years ago. This deposit resulted from metasomatism, a process where hot fluids from the invading Snoqualmie Batholith altered older Jurassic and Triassic sedimentary rocks, creating mineralized zones rich in calcite, epidote, grossular garnet, and magnetite. Historically, the mountain was prospected for iron ore, leading to the establishment of the Summit-Denny and Guye mining claims. In later decades, a steep canyon on the western slope known as Rockhound Gulch became a notable site for mineral collectors, who targeted the skarn exposures for quartz crystals, specifically Japan-law twins and amethyst scepters containing red hematite inclusions.
