A large deep black slightly translucent crystal of quartz. Very slight micro-damage present, I think considering the size of this crystal, this is in really good condition. The specimen comes with an old label that dates to the 1960s. The crystal is actually doubly terminated.

The pegmatites near Florissant, Colorado, formed within the Pikes Peak batholith during the Proterozoic eon, roughly one billion years ago, as slow-cooling magma injected into fractures within the surrounding granite. Geologically, these pegmatites are world-renowned for their complex pockets containing exceptional specimens of smoky quartz, goethite, and the vibrant blue-green microcline variety known as amazonite, whose color is attributed to trace amounts of lead and structural water. Historically, these deposits have attracted mineral collectors and miners since the late 19th century, becoming one of the most famous localities in North America for high-quality aesthetic mineral specimens.
