Quartz after Barite

specimen number:
1791273

location:
Ourika Valley, High Atlas Mts., Morocco

description:
Bladed crystals of what were once barite, these now replaced by sparkling micro crystalline quartz, across the top of matrix. In good condition.

The Ourika Valley, located in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, features a geological framework dominated by Precambrian basement rocks, Paleozoic granites, and extensive Cenozoic volcanic and sedimentary formations. Historically, the region has been inhabited by Berber communities and is known for small-scale artisanal mining and rich mineral occurrences tied to hydrothermal activity within the mountain belt. The mineralogy of the area includes various copper and iron secondary minerals, often found in veins and cavities associated with the region's complex tectonic and volcanic history.

Pseudomorphs of quartz after barite occur when silica-rich fluids replace original barite crystals while preserving their distinct tabular or prismatic habit. During this replacement process, the barite dissolves entirely and is systematically filled in or coated by microcrystalline quartz or chalcedony. The resulting specimen maintains the external geometry of the parent barite crystal, creating a durable quartz replica that is highly valued by mineral collectors for its unique preservation of an earlier mineral phase.
