A large platy crystal of what was once calcite, this now completely replaced by glistening crystals of quartz. Minor sphalerite and dolomite present. Wonderful example for this type of pseudomorph for the locality.

The Krushev dol Mine, situated within the prolific Madan ore field of the Smolyan Province in the Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, is a prominent underground lead and zinc mining operation. Geologically, the deposit is part of the Central Rhodope dome, consisting of metamorphic host rocks intruded by Tertiary magmatic activity and cut by hydrothermal quartz-sulfide veins and skarn-associated ore bodies. Mineralogically, the mine is world-famous among collectors for producing exceptional specimens of galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and associated quartz and calcite crystals. Historically, mining in the broader Madan region dates back to ancient Thracian times in the 4th to 5th centuries BC, with intensive modern industrial exploitation developing through twentieth-century state enterprises and continuing into the modern era for both commercial ore and fine mineral specimens.

Quartz after calcite is a classic and visually striking example of a pseudomorph, where quartz has completely replaced an earlier crystal of calcite while preserving its original shape. This geological transformation occurs when circulating hydrothermal or groundwater solutions rich in silica interact with pre-existing calcite crystals in mineral veins or cavities. Over time, the acidic or changing chemical conditions cause the vulnerable calcium carbonate of the calcite to dissolve while dissolved silica simultaneously precipitates and fills the void or coats the surface, eventually forming a rigid shell of microcrystalline quartz or chalcedony. Mineralogically, these specimens often retain the characteristic scalenohedral, rhombohedral, or tabular crystal forms of the original calcite, creating fascinating hollow or solid mineral artifacts.
