The Texas Springs Canyon locality, situated southeast of Jackpot in northeastern Elko County, Nevada, is a well-known site for collecting silicified petrified wood, specifically pink limb casts. Geologically, these specimens represent Oligocene to Miocene vegetation, including ancient coniferous trees, that was buried by thick pyroclastic flows and volcanic ash deposits associated with regional Cenozoic volcanism. Over millions of years, silica-rich groundwater permeated the empty voids left by the decaying wood, precipitating agate and chalcedony that preserved the external shapes and textures of the original branches. The distinctive pink coloration observed in these agate replacements is attributed to trace chemical impurities, such as manganese or iron oxides, present in the hydrothermal fluids during mineral deposition. Unlike large-scale industrial mines, the locality has never hosted commercial quarrying operations; instead, it has been worked exclusively through surface digging and hand-mining by hobbyists, rockhounds, and mineral collectors from the mid-twentieth century onward.
