An attractive cut and polished piece of petrified wood from New Zealand. This is 1/19 century example and at one time was part of the collection of Wilhelm Hoyer. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video.

Petrified wood is a highly specialized type of fossilized terrestrial vegetation that forms through the complex geological process of permineralization. Geologically, this transformation occurs when a fallen tree or woody plant becomes rapidly buried under thick layers of fine-grained sedimentary material, such as volcanic ash, river mud, or glacial till, which cuts off the supply of oxygen and halts the natural processes of aerobic decay. Over vast spans of geological time, groundwater rich in dissolved mineral compounds, most notably silica in the form of chalcedony, jasper, or opal, continuously flows through the porous sedimentary strata and infiltrates the organic tissues of the buried wood. As the individual plant cells, lignin, and cellulose structures slowly break down molecule by molecule, the dissolved minerals precipitate out of the solution and fill the empty spaces, creating an exact stone replica of the original organic material. This meticulous replacement process preserves the macro- and microscopic details of the wood with astonishing fidelity, often locking in original features such as bark patterns, annual growth rings, and cellular walls, while introducing a brilliant spectrum of colors caused by trace elemental impurities like iron oxides for reds and oranges, manganese for purples and blacks, and copper or chromium for vibrant greens and blues.

Wilhelm Hoyer was a notable nineteenth-century German engineer, educator, and avid mineral collector based in Hannover who compiled a highly systematic regional and international mineral collection. Geologically, Hoyer focused his personal collecting efforts on the diverse sedimentary, evaporite, and hydrothermal ore deposits of Lower Saxony and the Harz Mountains, amassing carefully documented representative suites of calcite, fluorite, gypsum, and various base-metal sulfides. Historically, his active collecting period spanned the mid-to-late 1800s while he served as a professor of mechanical engineering at the Technische Hochschule Hannover, during which time he maintained active exchanges with leading German mineralogists and commercial dealers to expand his cabinet. Following his death, his curated collection of several thousand meticulously labeled specimens was preserved intact when it was acquired by the major regional natural history museum in Hannover in the late nineteenth century, providing modern researchers with a clean historical record of European mineral localities before many of those historic localities were permanently closed or lost.
