The petrified forests of Patagonia, most famously represented by the Monumento Natural Bosques Petrificados in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, are globally renowned paleontological and geological localities celebrated for producing massive, structurally pristine fossilized logs of ancient conifer trees. Geologically, these spectacular deposits date back to the Late Jurassic period, roughly one hundred and fifty million years ago, when a highly humid, tropical forest dominated by primitive Araucaria trees was suddenly decimated and buried by catastrophic volcanic ash falls during the initial rifting of the South American continent. Groundwater heavily saturated with dissolved volcanic silica slowly saturated the buried organic wood fibers over millennia, systematically replacing the cell walls through a process of permineralization that preserved the intricate rings and cellular structures in rich, colorful chalcedony, jasper, and agate. Historically, the area was brought to international scientific attention following expeditions in the 1920s, which led to the formal establishment of a strictly protected national monument in 1954 to prevent widespread, destructive commercial quarrying and illegal surface mining. While commercial fossil extraction and large-scale open-pit excavation are strictly banned within the national parks, controlled legal quarrying on authorized private estancias outside the reserve boundaries has supplied the global lapidary trade with spectacular polished rounds and display slabs from the mid-twentieth century through 2026.
