An open pocket across the top of matrix is lined with lustrous dark smoky quartz crystals. A partial crystal grouping of calcite is present as well. Slight damage present, this mainly confined to the edges of the piece. Nice for this classic locality.

Idar-Oberstein, Germany, is globally recognized as a historic center for gemstone cutting and mineralogy, centered on the unique volcanic geology of the Saar-Nahe Basin. Geologically, the area is characterized by Permian-age tholeiitic basalts and andesites containing numerous gas vesicles or amygdales. Within these cavities, silica-rich hydrothermal fluids deposited spectacular layers of agate, amethyst, and smoky quartz crystals over millions of years. Historically, mining and quarrying for these quartz varieties began as early as the 14th century, with organized underground mining at sites like the Steinkaulenberg peaking during the 17th and 18th centuries. As the local deposits became largely exhausted by the early 1800s, the region's skilled lapidaries began importing rough material from Brazil and Uruguay, ensuring the city's survival as a major gemstone hub. While commercial mining at the Steinkaulenberg officially ceased in 1870, the site was later reopened as a visitor mine for educational and tourism purposes.
