Quartz with Calcite, Chalcopyrite
specimen number:
2312163
location:
Cavnic, Maramures Co., Romania
description: The Cavnic Mine, located in Maramures County in northwestern Romania, is a historic underground mining center with centuries of activity focused on base and precious metal extraction. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the Neogene volcanic belt of the Gutai Mountains in the Inner Carpathians, where complex hydrothermal vein systems cut through volcanic and sedimentary host rocks. These mineralizing solutions deposited large quantities of lead, zinc, copper, gold, and silver ores alongside various gangue minerals. The underground stopes and vein networks are internationally renowned among mineral collectors for producing well-crystallized specimens, including quartz, calcite, dolomite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, barite, and rhodochrosite.
Attractive cluster of glassy quartz crystals. In good condition. Minor calcite and chalcopyrite present.
