The Trepca mining complex in Kosovo has a rich history of metal extraction dating back to medieval and Roman times, with large-scale industrial operations expanding significantly during the twentieth century. Geologically, the deposit is centered around the Stari Trg ore body, featuring massive carbonate replacement and skarn deposits formed by hydrothermal activity associated with regional Oligo-Miocene volcanic and magmatic events. The interaction of these hot, mineral-rich fluids with older limestone and sedimentary formations created complex sulfide orebodies. While historically mined on a massive scale for lead, zinc, and silver, the underground workings are internationally renowned among mineral collectors for producing diverse and well-crystallized specimens of minerals such as galena, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and calcite.
