Quartz with Calcite, Siderite
specimen number:
2312381
location:
Cavnic, Maramures Co., Romania
description: Cavnic is a historic mining town located in Maramures County in northwestern Romania, with archival records of mining dating back to 1336. Geologically, the deposit sits within the Neogene volcanic belt of the Gutai Mountains, where complex hydrothermal vein systems cut through volcanic and sedimentary host rocks. These mineralizing fluids deposited rich polymetallic ores containing lead, zinc, copper, gold, and silver. The underground veins are world famous among mineral collectors for producing exceptional aesthetic specimens, particularly quartz, calcite, dolomite, rhodochrosite, barite, and various sulfide minerals.
Scalenohedral crystals of what were once calcite measuring to 4.0 cm in height, these replaced by brown crystallized siderite. Several different generations of crystallized quartz are coating the siderite throughout. Neat specimen in great condition. At one time this piece was part of the collection of Wolfgang Henkel. Looking at the video you can see the hollow nature of the now gone calcite crystals.
