Quartz with Goethite
specimen number:
1052191
location:
Steinkaulenberg, Idar, Idar-Oberstein, Birkenfeld, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
description:
A large, open geode half lined with glistening quartz crystals and scattered small goethite crystals, this specimen presents a striking contrast of textures and subtle color on matrix. Very slight damage is present, but the piece remains overall attractive and displayable. From the historic Birkenfeld region in Idar Oberstein, Germany, an area long celebrated for its gem and mineral production, including agate, quartz, and associated iron minerals, the locality has been a hub for collectors since the 19th century. This specimen comes with an antique label, as shown at the end of the video, noting that it was once part of the collection of Wilhelm Christoph Hoyer (1826-1897), who is noted in historical sources as having "an extensive mineral collection" and being regarded as an authority in mineralogy in his region of Oldenburg.
