Quartz with Hematite

specimen number:
1605078

location:
Hibbing, St. Louis Co., Minnesota, USA

description:
Superb miniature for this locality, a double terminated lustrous grouping of translucent quartz crystals to .7 cm across perched beautifully up on a crystallized hematite matrix. This is in very good condition all around.

Hibbing, located in St. Louis County, Minnesota, is a historic hub of the Mesabi Iron Range, founded in 1893 by Frank Hibbing following the discovery of massive iron ore deposits. Geologically, the area sits atop the Biwabik Iron Formation, a Paleoproterozoic sedimentary rock sequence that underwent extensive weathering and oxidation, concentrating high-grade hematite and goethite ores near the surface. Historically, the town became world-famous for the massive Hull-Rust-Mahoning Open Pit Mine, one of the largest man-made excavations in the world, which fueled American industrial growth and steel production through the twentieth century.
