Historically, mining in this rugged desert landscape has been primarily artisanal and small-scale, with local miners and independent prospectors hand-extracting specimens from remote hillside workings. While industrial mining for other commodities like base metals and diamonds has occurred in the broader region for over a century, the systematic recovery of collector-quality quartz gained significant international momentum in the late 20th century and continues to this day. The harsh climate and difficult terrain mean that production is often seasonal, yet the locality remains a prolific and essential source for some of the most aesthetically unique quartz clusters in the global mineral market.
