Quartz with Malachite, Chrysocolla

specimen number:
2292192

location:
Orogrande, Otero Co., New Mexico, USA

description:
Classic specimen from New Mexico, sparkling crystals of quartz covering both botryoidal crystallized malachite and chrysocolla. This is in good condition and very attractive.

The Orogrande mining district, located within the Jarilla Mountains of Otero County, New Mexico, is a historical copper, gold, silver, and iron mining center known for producing localized mineral specimens including copper secondary minerals. Geologically, the district is centered around a Tertiary-age granodiorite porphyry stock that intruded into Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, primarily Carboniferous limestones and shales. This igneous intrusion resulted in contact metamorphism and the formation of skarn deposits and hydrothermal veins rich in base and precious metal mineralization within the contact zones. Initial prospecting and mining began in the late 1870s, with a major gold rush occurring around 1904 following the discovery of the Nannie Baird vein, which prompted the founding of the town of Orogrande. Active underground mining, small-scale quarrying, and smelting operations peaked between 1905 and World War I, with sporadic mining for iron ore and copper continuing through the 1930s and 1940s. Since the mid-twentieth century, commercial metal production has largely ceased, though the district remains a frequent site for localized mineral collecting and minor exploration efforts into the 2020s.
