A fine 19th century example showing crystals of colorless quartz to almost 2.0 cm in size across the top of matrix and dusted with micro crystals of pyrite. The specimen comes with the previous antique label as shown at the end of the video. In good condition.

The Grossvoigtsberg mining district, located near Mittelsachsen in Saxony, Germany, is an ancient silver-bearing locality situated within the western portion of the historic Freiberg mining region. Geologically, the deposit consists of high-grade polymetallic epithermal veins cutting through late Paleozoic metamorphic rocks, primarily biotite gneisses and schists. These structural fissures were mineralized by regional hydrothermal fluids that deposited rich assemblages of native silver, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and various arsenate-sulfate minerals within a quartz and carbonate gangue. Commercial underground extraction began during the medieval period, with primary operations centered on historic mines like the Christbescherung and Emanuel Erbstolln. Mining activity in the district reached peak production during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as technological advancements allowed deeper shaft sinking, before declining reserves and shifting economic conditions led to the systematic closure of the primary deep operations by the early twentieth century.

Wilhelm Hoyer was a nineteenth-century German mineral collector and dealer who assembled a notable private collection of European minerals. Active during a period of major expansion in systematic European mineralogy, he maintained professional networks to acquire and distribute specimens from classic mining regions, including the Harz Mountains and the Saxon Erzgebirge. His preserved specimens, often identified by distinctive handwritten or printed historical labels, eventually transitioned into prominent university and institutional collections after his death in 1893.
